Landscape Architect/Planner I, II, or III
The Landscape Architect/Planner I, II or III will utilize their licensure status, technical acumen, and creativity to oversee the technical production of projects and produce innovative solutions to the client’s design challenges.

Position Title: Landscape Architect/Planner I, II or III (submit resume)

General Position Description: The Landscape Architect/Planner I, II or III will utilize their licensure status, technical acumen, and creativity to oversee the technical production of projects and produce innovative solutions to the client’s design challenges.

In general, the scope and focus of this role will consist of the following competencies:

PRIMARY COMPETENCY: TECHNICAL EFFECTIVENESS

SECONDARY COMPETENCY: PROJECT MANAGEMENT

TERTIARY COMPETENCY: MENTORSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

TECHNICAL EFFECTIVENESS

  • Boasts 3-10 years of work experience within the Northern Virginia region; specific experience within Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Arlington, Stafford, and Culpeper Counties is preferred.  Experience within other adjoining localities, not specifically named, in the region is a plus.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of place-making in both urban and suburban settings.
  • Experience with and ability to complete feasibility studies, yield studies, zoning analyses, due diligence checklists, and identify potential site constraints and remedies.
  • Candidate shall possess experience in preparing design guidelines, master zoning plans, generalized development plans, and conceptual and/or final development plans.
  • Candidate shall possess working knowledge of the entitlement process within one or more of the jurisdictions listed above.  The entitlement process may include applications for rezonings, special use permits, special exceptions, special permits, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation of design and construction drawings for both landscape and general site designs including layout, grading, and hardscape.
  • Collaborate with team members to guide and shape the design and delivery of projects of various scales and types.
  • Assist and provide ideas for enhancement in the development of conceptual designs using a variety of hand-drawn and digital techniques.
  • Progressively build and share expertise in design platforms such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Suite.
  • Prepare digital graphics and renderings with Adobe Creative Suite and presentation software.
  • Provide graphic design, technical production, urban and landscape design, and site planning expertise for a variety of projects including but not limited to mixed-use residential development, streetscapes, parks, and other community facility design.
  • Research zoning codes, entitlement processes, and permit requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Remain current with Local, State, and Federal design standards and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of planting design and plant material suitable for the project region.
  • Perform QA/QC of own work and team members before final submission to the client.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the design of creative exterior amenity spaces.
  • Design and build models in AutoCAD and SketchUp.
  • Learn from previous design efforts to build skillsets.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Assist the Project Manager with the preparation of proposals and Scope of Work (SOWs) sent to clients.
  • Assist the Project Manager with billing and accounting functions.
  • Assist the Project Manager with managing team effort and coordinating with other Project Managers in all phases of projects.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to develop, track, and maintain the project schedule to ensure internal deliverables, client expectations, and quality standards are met.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between other project participants, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients.
  • Monitor and maintain project schedule, assist with managing contract budget and billing, and write change orders as necessary to address changes to scope.

MENTORSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

  • Mentor less experienced staff to promote growth and advancement.
  • Maintain professional licensure.
  • Maintain a presence in Landscape Architecture services through involvement in civic, professional, and business organizations.
  • Utilize internal and external training resources in order to advance required skills.
  • Engage in training that furthers professional development.
  • Seek out and participate in opportunities to share knowledge with staff through formal and informal training processes, including lunch’n’learns and workshops.

Project Engineer
The Project Engineer I, Land Development will assist team members on all phases of projects with an emphasis on developing design and technical documentation expertise.

Position Title: Project Engineer I, Land Development (submit resume)

General Position Description: The Project Engineer I, Land Development will assist team members on all phases of projects with an emphasis on developing design and technical documentation expertise. The Project Engineer I, Land Development will utilize problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills to learn and complete the responsibilities asked of them.

In general, the scope and focus of this role will consist of the following competencies:

TECHNICAL EFFECTIVENESS

  • Assist senior staff members in the development of design and technical documents through all phases of projects.
  • Assist in the development of site designs on various land development projects using mainly AutoCAD and Civil 3D software platforms.
  • Develop design efficiencies using Civil 3D software.
  • Assist in the development of construction drawings and work with internal production staff to meet deadlines for site development projects that include site layout, site grading, site geometry, site utilities, and site storm drainage, for commercial, institutional, infrastructure, and transportation projects.
  • Assist in the development of planning studies, preliminary and final design plan production, and project permitting.
  • Assist in the development of erosion and sediment control plans and design E&S control measures in accordance with state criteria.
  • Research applicable codes, entitlement processes, and permit requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Remain current with Local, State, and Federal design standards and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Perform QA/QC of own work before submission to senior team members.
  • Apply institutional knowledge and LDC standards to expedite repetitive tasks and design solutions.
  • Maintain notes during calls and meetings and maintain field notes from site visits.
  • Learn from previous design efforts to build skillsets.
  • Update project lists, status of jobs, and relevant dates.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Follow the guidance and expertise of the Senior staff to learn client management techniques and relationships.
  • Develop an understanding of the project schedule, client expectations, and deliverables.
  • Consistently coordinate with project managers regarding project status and deadlines.

MENTORSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

  • Maintain presence and leadership in Civil Engineering services through involvement in civic, professional, and business organizations.
  • Utilize internal and external training resources in order to advance required skills.
  • Pursue and maintain professional licensure.
  • Engage in training that furthers professional development.

The Project Manager will play a significant role as an internal mentor to staff and an external ambassador to clients and stakeholders.

In general, the scope and focus of this role will consist of the following competencies:

TECHNICAL EFFECTIVENESS

  • Play a significant role in the preparation of design and technical documents through all phases of projects.
  • Collaborate with team members to guide and shape the design and delivery of projects of a variety of scales and types.
  • Support non-routine design assignments requiring the application of advanced CAD techniques and providing varying complexity levels of design calculations.
  • Support productions of detailed construction drawings and work with internal production staff to meet deadlines for site development projects that include site layout, site grading, site geometry, site utilities, and site storm drainage, for commercial, institutional, infrastructure, and transportation projects.
  • Address technical and production-related questions from production staff to guide and shape the design and delivery of a wide variety of projects.
  • Communicate with other discipline to ensure effective communication and collaboration on projects.
  • Implement project-specific AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or MicroStation CAD requirements, and coordinate production with other firms to ensure conformance with client standards.
  • Work closely with architecture, survey, and other disciplines on large-scale projects.
  • Advance and lead planning studies, preliminary and final design plan production, and project permitting.
  • Research applicable codes, entitlement processes, and permit requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Remain current with Local, State, and Federal design standards and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Perform QA/QC of own work and the work of team members.
  • Apply institutional knowledge and LDC standards to expedite repetitive tasks and design solutions.
  • Uphold and enforce high-quality standards throughout all aspects of the projects.
  • Review and approve design tasks performed by team members.
  • Guide others’ design and technical documents.
  • Bring technical and engineering expertise to project effort and share knowledge with team members.
  • Review design, documentation, and planning tasks performed by team members.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Prepare proposals and Scope of Work (SOWs) for clients.
  • Manage contract budget and monthly billing.
  • Utilize accounting and project management systems to prepare client invoices and to understand, and improve project fiscal performance.
  • Review ARs and work with Principals to ensure timely payment of invoices.
  • Aid in the development, tracking, and maintenance of the project schedule to ensure deliverables are completed to ensure client expectations are met.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between other project participants, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients.
  • Ensure client expectations are met and deliverables meet quality standards.

MENTORSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

  • Maintain the trust and respect of staff, peers, and clients.
